Water Heater Replacement
Water heater replacement for leaking, worn out or undersized tanks in Connecticut homes and businesses, with removal of the old unit and clean up.
Water Heater Replacement details
Cold showers, a puddle under the tank or a heater that rumbles like a boiler all have a cause we can find. We diagnose the unit, explain the fix and quote it before we start.
Quick answer: The most common causes are a failed heating element, a bad thermostat or a tripped high limit switch on an electric unit. Winter makes weak parts fail sooner, because incoming water is colder and the heater runs longer. Sediment buildup can also bury the lower element. We test each part, find the one that failed and quote the repair before we start.
Most water heater problems come down to a handful of parts: heating elements, thermostats, the anode rod, the drain valve, the temperature and pressure relief valve, or the dip tube. When one of them fails you lose hot water, get lukewarm showers, hear popping from the tank or see rusty water at the tap. Water heater repair means testing those parts, replacing what has failed and flushing out the sediment that hard water and well water leave behind. Fullerton Plumbing handles tank water heater repair for homes and businesses in every Connecticut county, 24 hours a day.
Repair is not always the right answer, and we will tell you when it is not. A heater with a leaking tank cannot be patched, and a unit near the end of its service life may not justify new parts. We check the age from the serial number, look at the tank, the connections and the venting area, and give you an upfront quote for the repair. If replacement makes more sense, we explain why and quote that too. Either way, we test the system before we leave and clean up.

We confirm power to the unit, check the settings and look for obvious leaks at the fittings, valves and tank. Small issues like a tripped high limit switch or a loose connection get found here before we move on to deeper testing of the heating parts.
We test elements and thermostats on electric units, inspect the anode rod and relief valve, and look for sediment buildup. Each reading tells us which part failed. You hear what we found in plain language, not a vague guess about the heater being old.
You get an upfront quote for the repair before any work begins. If the tank itself is leaking or the heater is near the end of its life, we say so and quote replacement alongside the repair so you can compare the options yourself.
We replace the failed part, flush sediment when it helps, refill the tank and run hot water through the house to confirm normal temperature and pressure. We check every connection for drips and clean up the area around the heater before we go.
Water quality shapes how long a water heater lasts in Connecticut. Many homes outside the cities, across Litchfield, Tolland and Windham counties and in Fairfield County towns like Ridgefield, Redding and Wilton, run on private wells. Well water can carry minerals, iron and sediment that settle in the bottom of the tank, coat heating elements and wear out anode rods faster. That sediment layer causes the popping and rumbling sound many homeowners hear. Sulfur smells from the hot water are common on some wells too, and an anode rod change often helps.
Basements matter as well. Many water heaters sit in unfinished basements in older colonials and capes, close to the sump pit and floor drain. When spring thaw raises the water table or a nor'easter floods the basement, the base of the heater can rust. Cold incoming water in a Connecticut winter also makes the heater work harder, so weak elements fail in January. We see these patterns from Danbury to Norwich and repair them the same way: test, explain, quote, fix.
Water heater repair cost depends on which part failed, the type and size of the heater and how easy the unit is to reach. Swapping a thermostat or element on an electric heater is a different job from replacing a corroded relief valve or a seized drain valve. Heavy sediment may need a full flush. Tight closets and crowded utility rooms add time. If the tank is leaking, repair is off the table and replacement becomes the conversation. You always get an upfront quote before any work starts.

It depends on the age and the problem. Replacing a thermostat, element or relief valve on a heater with years left is usually worth it. If the tank itself leaks, it cannot be repaired. If the heater is near the end of its typical life and needs costly parts, replacement may be smarter. We give you both quotes so you can decide.
That sulfur smell usually comes from bacteria in well water reacting with the anode rod inside the tank. It is common in Connecticut homes on private wells. Replacing the anode rod with a different type and flushing the tank often reduces the odor. We inspect the rod and the tank and quote the fix before doing any work.
Popping or rumbling is usually sediment at the bottom of the tank. Minerals settle out of the water, trap pockets of water under them, and those pockets boil and pop as the heater runs. Flushing the tank can quiet it and improve efficiency. Heavy, long term buildup can shorten the life of the heater, so it is worth having it checked.
A dripping temperature and pressure relief valve means the valve is worn or the tank is seeing too much heat or pressure. Either way, do not cap or plug it. The valve is a safety device. Call us to test the temperature, pressure and valve, and we will replace the valve or fix the cause with an upfront quote first.
